Promotions and competitions
Lotteries and games of chance may be used by businesses to promote a particular product or service, to raise money for non-profit organisations or by registered clubs to increase membership.
Our office regulates the operation of community-based lottery activities in NSW, including common forms of promotions and competitions, known as community gaming, such as lotteries and games of chance.
We do not oversee commercial-based lottery games conducted by the NSW Lotteries Corporation.
Forms of community gaming permitted under the law are:
- raffles (including guessing competitions), no-draw lotteries (scratch, break-open lotteries), mini-numbers (lotto style games), art unions, football doubles and variations;
- charity housie, lucky envelopes, chocolate wheels;
- club bingo, promotional raffles;
- social housie;
- sweeps and calcuttas;
- football tipping competitions, hundred clubs; and
- trade promotion lotteries, gratuitous lotteries.
The promotions and competitions pages provide important information about the laws relating to lotteries and games of chance, how to apply for permits, community gambling in other states and territories and income tax provisions.
